PE

Everyone needs to think about their health and physical fitness. We at Team Byrchall want all students to think about personal development and develop lifelong participation in sport and exercise. Excellence, participation and fun are key elements of the work we do as part of being Team Byrchall.

Physical Education is the key factor in promoting heath and well bring amongst the Byrchall community. Team Byrchall Physical Education and Dance provides the opportunity to all to get involved in sport either at competitive level or for fun to benefit health and fitness. The PE team offer a range of activities and qualifications both in and outside the curriculum to take part in sport and physical activity. The PE team hope all students will find a sport to play for life and live up to is departmental motto "Team Byrchall – Sport for Life."

Curriculum Aims

  • To develop skilful use of the body, the ability to remember, repeat and refine actions and to perform them with increasing control, co-ordination and fluency.
  • To develop an increasing ability to select, link and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas.
  • To improve observation skills (at times utilising ICT) and the ability to describe and make simple judgements on their own and others work, and to use their observations and judgements to improve performance.
  • To develop an understanding of the effects of exercise on the body and an appreciation of the value of safe exercising.
  • To promote an understanding of safe practice, and develop a sense of responsibility towards their own and others’ safety and well-being.
  • To encourage and foster lifelong interest in participation in sport and exercise.
  • To create leaders who will work within the sporting industry as volunteers, coaches, officials and players.

Team Byrchall offers an amazing range of activities for students to experience. The department has a fantastic record of results in a range of courses and qualifications. Additionally, Team Byrchall extensive extra-curricular programme offers students the opportunities to take part in competitive sport. The department operates a "Sport for All" and firmly believe that all students should have the opportunity to take part in activity. Furthermore, the department has enjoyed huge success in local and regional competitions and have outstanding results in many sports such as hockey, football and athletics.

The department operates with a number of specialist staff who deliver across the curriculum:

Head of Department PEMr R Williams
Head of Key Stage 3 PEMr M Gregory
Head of Key Stage 3 PEMiss K Beattie
Teacher of PEMiss K Kupton
Teacher of PE (Ass. Headteacher)Mr P. Paul
Teacher of Dance / PEMrs K. Johnson (Y9/11 PISM)
PE Teaching AssistantMr D Gaskell

The department believe that Physical Education and Dance is of great importance in the curriculum. Physical Education is a core subject at KS3 and KS4 and therefore plays a large part in all pupils’ school experience. The department believe that successful teaching of Physical Education skills, knowledge, understanding and leadership will develop and enhance pupils’ confidence, capability and most importantly health.

The Department hopes to deliver a varied curriculum giving all pupils an opportunity to succeed. This curriculum also takes into account the facilities available and the specialisms of departmental staff.

Sound pedagogical ideas, a varied curriculum and the use of different teaching and learning styles will aid the delivery of the curriculum.

At Key stage 3, all students access 2 hours of Physical Education per week in the curriculum. At Key Stage 4 students access 1 hour per week in the curriculum.

At Key Stage 4, pupils have the opportunity to choose activities in which they take part via a route system. In this system they will choose a designated pathway which will ensure a balanced curriculum but also allow them some choice. It is hoped that this will encourage participation of pupils and raise motivation by allowing them to select activities that they enjoy.

Pupils also have the option of studying Physical Education at GCSE level (options Y8).

Courses available are:

  • Full course GCSE Physical Education (EDEXCEL Exam Board)
  • There is also a short course of the above exam. Entrance to the short course is determined by staff after reviewing pupil progress and predicted grades.
  • This course is also run by the EDEXCEL exam board.
  • The department also currently run a BTEC Award course to support different learning styles. This option runs alongside the GCSE course and studies 4 units over a 3 year course (x2 lessons per week). Edexcel syllabus at present.
  • Pupils also have the option of studying GCSE Dance in KS4. This option follows the AQA syllabus.

Additionally, the department work with the extended schools co-ordinator to put on further out of hours opportunities that may benefit pupils. The department can obviously only offer activities that it has facilities available for. These opportunities are offered for the following reasons:

  • Offer all pupils an opportunity to play and enjoy a particular sport
  • Develop skills of all pupils who attend extra-curricular activities
  • Allow able, gifted and talented pupils an opportunity to develop their skills further with the support of staff
  • Allow pupils further on-task time in particular sports. This is particularly important due to limited time that PE is afforded on the time-table (particularly at Key Stage 4).
  • Develop opportunities for pupils to receive government recommended 2 hrs of high quality Physical Education each week.
  • Provide support for GCSE Physical Education and Dance programmes
  • Improve social skills of pupils’ and teach further the importance of fair play.
  • Encourage pupils’ to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • Provide staff with further opportunity to identify able, gifted and talented pupils.
  • To allow pupils the possibility of being selected for school teams, where they will compete against other schools.
  • To allow pupils the possibility of being selected for county and regional teams.
  • To allow all students a chance to improve their skills and fitness no matter what their level of performance.

Furthermore a number of students are now involved in leadership programmes to start them on the road to coaching awards and careers. A number of these students are involved in extra-curricular sport both in school and in the community to develop these skills. The dept believe that this experience is vital for these students and support this process where possible.

Current activities accessible can be seen in the Extra-curricular timetable available on the PE area of the school website and the Team Byrchall Twitter Page (@ByrchallPE).
