Product Design

“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes, Design is knowing which ones to keep” - Scott Adams

All Product Design staff will strive to enthuse, facilitate and shape our Byrchall students to be creative problem solvers who are confident, resilient and most importantly passionate about the products they design & make.

Nobody ever really thinks about how we all go about our everyday lives. Look all around you and you'll see:

  • Gadgets that we rely or enjoy at our leisure. Can you imagine living without your mobile phone?
  • Accessories and clothes that we wear
  • Types of transport that get us around
  • Buildings or structures that we visit
These have all been designed by people with imagination, made to satisfy peoples’ needs and created to improve the way we live, work & play using the principals of product design. Our Product Design students could become the next generation of inventors, designers, thinkers or makers that are responsible for shaping our future quality of life.

At Byrchall we take steps to innovate, inspire, and challenge our students to be respectful, responsible & to have fun. Everyone will progress, develop their skills and be prepared for the 21st century world. Product Design offers a unique opportunity for our students to experience the latest techniques in designing & making of products, using a variety of materials & processes.

Product Design is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Our key aims are:

  • To develop students’ creativity and imagination, so they can design and make high quality products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
  • To ensure that students have a broad range of subject knowledge with regards to materials and processes and encourage them to draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art in order to solve problems and bring their ideas to life.
  • To encourage pupils to take design risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
  • To encourage students to take an interest in evaluating past and present designs so they can develop a good understanding of how products impact their daily life and the wider world.
  • To inspire students how their interests in Product Design can lead to a rewarding career in design.
Our Product Design Department boast a range of specialist equipment such as Computer Aided Design workstations, 3D printing, laser cutters and sublimation facilities.
