Byrchall High School Foundation Trust

Byrchall High School was founded in 1588. The members of the Foundation are linked to the history of the school.

The founder of the school was Robert Byrchall. He wished to provide a teacher, gratis, for all the youth of Ashton and the surrounding area. Sir Thomas Gerard gave the ground for the original school to be built on. John Ashton of Liverpool gave money in 1748 because he wanted the students to be instructed in religion and morality. Robert Byrchall was involved in the setting up of the the Stock Charities to clothe the youth of Ashton.

The Stock Charity eventually became the Linen and Woollen Stock Charity; they have a representative on the Foundation. The estate of the late Lord Gerard also appoint a member to the Foundation, along with the University of Liverpool.
